Saturday 08 August

Melbourne – Quito

We shall be transferred from Gippsland and depart Melbourne via Sydney and Santiago to Quito. Quito is the capital of Ecuador and of Pichincha, the country's most populous Andean province. Situated 116 miles from the Pacific coast at an altitude of 9,350 feet, just south of the equator, it has a pleasant climate that can be described as "permanent spring". The city is one of the oldest in South America and is built in a small basin on the lower slopes of Cerro Pichincha, a volcano that last erupted in 1666. More than any other South American capital, Quito has preserved its colonial atmosphere, with squares, fountains, public buildings, and houses built in the typical Spanish or Moorish style. Most attractive is the main square, Plaza Mayor, with its seventeenth-century cathedral, government palaces, municipal hall and other buildings. Quito is well known for its many small workshops producing native arts and for its outdoor Indian markets.  On our arrival in Quito, we will be transferred to our hotel, the J.W Marriott Hotel, where we stay for the next two nights.  We will enjoy a dinner at the hotel tonight.

Saturday 09 August Quito

Today we will have a guided sightseeing tour of the Old City. Starting with Guapulo, La Compania churches and San Francisco Monastery, then continue to the Cathedral, the Presidential Palace, then to El Panecillo Hill home to the statue of the Virgin Mary where we can appreciate the view of the entire city. We will then be visiting the Equatorial Monument taking a visit to the Ehtnographic Museum and a chance to stand in the two hemispheres at the same time, before returning back to our hotel.

Monday 10 August Galapagos

This morning we have an early departure for our flight to the Galapagos Islands, arriving mid-morning.   A trip to Ecuador is not complete without a visit to the Galapagos Archipelago, located almost 1,000 kilometers from the Ecuadorian continental coastline. Made up of 13 large islands, 17 small ones and 47 rocky islets, the archipelago covers an area of 8,000 square kilometers. The Islands were discovered in 1535 by Brother Tomás de Berlanga. Declared a National Park in 1959, the Charles Darwin Foundation was also organized this year to commemorate the islands' link with the evolutionary scientist. The Province of Galapagos was legally created in 1973 and it was declared a "Natural Heritage of Humanity" by UNESCO in 1979. The natural surroundings and the unique flora and fauna are not found anywhere else in the entire world. We can enjoy this paradise, navigating in a 90 passenger 5-star fully air conditioned cruise ship, with all the commodities of a cruise liner yet small enough for an intimate experience with nature that brings you to the Galapagos. All with ocean views, the cabins are extremely luxurious. Facilities on board include naturalist multilingual guides, culinary delights in the dining room, 24 hour coffee bar, swimming pool with broad sun decks and observation platforms.

Tuesday 11 August Galapagos Islands

Our first landing today is at Santa Cruz and we walk to a saltwater lagoon behind the beach, where on occasion many pink flamingos can be observed. This trail leads up to Dragon Hill, which offers a lovely view of the bay. This is a nesting site for reintroduced land iguanas, and there is also a Scalesia tree forest. Or we may opt to take a dinghy to Venice islet and observe the vegetation and marine animals like spotted eagle rays, golden rays, mullets, sharks and sea turtles. Land iguanas have often been observed as well.
Our next landing is at Floreana (Cormorant Point) on a greenish colored sand beach. Here we can take a hike from the black mangrove beds to a large, brackish lagoon, which holds one of the biggest flamingo populations in the Galapagos. The island is best known for its endemic plants like the Galapagos millwork, passion flower and button mangrove. Novice snorkelers can practice on the main beach with the playful sea lions; experienced snorkelers can roam around Devils Crown.

Wednesday 12 August

Galapagos Islands

Our tour today takes us to Española (Suárez Point) and San Cristóbal (Interpretation Center or La Galapaguera). We will learn more about the lava terrain and cross the inactive lava fields. Besides the sea lion colonies, this is a very important site for bird watching. Many species, such as the hooded mocking bird and red billed tropic bird can be spotted and observed closely. We will also see a large colony of marine iguanas, lava lizards, and rally light foot crabs. After a short trek we encounter colonies of masked and blue-footed boobies. The nesting grounds sometimes overlap the trail. Here we will also find Galapagos doves, hawks and swallow-tailed gulls and then reach the world’s largest colony of waved albatross. A visit to the famous blowhole, where water shoots into the air about 23 m (75 ft), is a must.  At the San Cristóbal Interpretation Center or La Galapaguera we will visit the San Cristóbal breeding center and learn about the National Park’s breeding program with the giant tortoises and also observe some magnificient animals in their natural environment.

Thursday 13 August

Galapagos Islands - Quito

As we arrive back at Santa Cruz we have the opportunity to snorkel and see a variety of fish, rays and perhaps the harmless white tip reef sharks. From Punta Carrion the short navigation is through the beautiful Itabaca Channel with its turquoise waters. On our return to the Galapagos Legend, we check-out and transfer to the airport for our return flight to Quito, and will be transferred back to the J.W Marriott Hotel, in time for rest and freshening up before dinner at the hotel.

Friday 14 August

Quito - Cotopaxi - Buenos Aires

Today we leave Quito, heading south to visit Ecuador’s first National Park, Cotopaxi. Our full day excursion will take us through the Avenue of the Volcanoes to the Cotopaxi Volcano National Park, home to the highest active volcano on earth. You may be lucky enough to see llamas and alpacas in their natural habitat while enjoying a tour of magnificent views. We will have the opportunity to enjoy a delicious lunch in a traditional Andean hacienda, or visit an indigenous Market, depending on market days.  After we return to the hotel, it is time to pack up for our transfer to the airport for our overnight flight to Buenos Aires.

Saturday 15 August

Buenos Aires

After we arrive at Buenos Aires, we will be met and transferred to our hotel, to enjoy a day of leisure before meeting with fellow passengers prior to commencing our South America Spectacular tour tomorrow.

Tuesday 18th August Iguazu Falls

We transfer to the airport for our flight to Iguazu Falls. The Iguazu Falls is the region of great rivers, humid tropics, red earth and magnificent jungle. The deep flowing waters of the river fall from heights of 70 metres through 275 falls spread over 2.7 kms. The frontier with Brazil goes through the Garganta del Diablo ( Devil's Throat) where the falling water gives the illusion of magic rainbows. The national park is full of exotic subtropical vegetation which surrounds the falls and has 2000 plant species - gigantic trees, ferns, lianas, orchids - 400 birds species - parrots, colibris, toucans - jaguars and yacares (caimans). A visit to these falls is a truly unforgettable experience. Wednesday 19th August

Iguazu Falls

Today we will embark on a full-day guided tour on the Argentine side of the Falls and Devil’s Throat. We shall walk along the many tracks on this side of the river and observe the falls from platforms that brings us extremely close to the water. 'Iguazu' in the Indian Tupi Guarani language means large waters. The Iguazu River flows east west for 808 miles and then drops suddenly and violently into a 262-foot abyss at the falls. Set amidst jungle, a visit to these falls will be an unforgettable experience. Dinner tonight is at the hotel. (B,D)

Several streams of clear water run through the area. Over 6 miles of jungle trails including un-catalogued species, natural savannahs and creeks enable guests to explore the jungle, observe orchids and giant trees. Saturday 22nd August

Amazon Ecopark Lodge

Our full day tour begins after breakfast and takes us to the Meeting of the Waters. This is a relaxing day enjoying the views along the river banks from our Amazon river boat.

Sunday 2 November

Amazon Ecopark Lodge - Manaus - Rio de Janeiro

We shall transfer to the airport for our flight to Rio de Janeiro. In the early 16th century, the Portuguese first arrived at the site where Rio de Janeiro now stands.  What they found was a still-watered bay surrounded by a plentiful and lovely landscape. It was love at first sight. The Portuguese promptly built a fortress at the entrance of the bay to ward off those attracted to their tropical paradise, which they called Sao Sebastiao do Rio de Janeiro. By 1768 Rio had developed and grown to such an extent that the government was transferred from the previous capital, Salvador. Rio was then, as now, a city of intensive trading activities. Its primary asset, Guanabara Bay was not just a beautiful landmark, but also a natural port through which the gold and diamonds, mined in the neighbouring Minas Gerais Mountains, flowed. The gems, used to adorn the ladies of the Portuguese Court, and rare sugar cane, were important commodities in the European markets of this time. When King Joao VI of Portugal landed in Rio in 1808 along with his court and entire entourage, he fell in love with what he saw and experienced, and subsequently helped Rio to become one of the most important political centres in Brazilian history. Brazil achieved independence from Portugal in 1822 and became an empire. Some years later in 1889, the city of Rio enthusiastically witnessed the Proclamation of the Republic of Brazil. Rio de Janeiro has evolved continuously since, remaining a centre for business and the arts while becoming one of the world’s most dynamic cities.  At the airport we will be met and transferred to the Sofitel Hotel, or similar, for the next four nights.

Monday  24th August Rio de Janeiro

We start our day with a half day tour of Corcovado Mountain & Christ the Redeemer. From any place in the city, visitors can see the most beautiful Christ the Redeemer statue on the mountain of Corcovado, located 710 meters above sea level and inaugurated in 1931. This tour begins in Cosme Velho's neighbourhood from where the cog train starts a trip through the Tijuca Forest, the largest urban forest in the world, up to the statue. Once there, a breathtaking panoramic view of Rio will be seen. After travelling back down through the forest, the tour will continue to the São Conrado area. Lunch will be at a local restaurant with the afternoon and evening free to indulge in the many attractions Rio has to offer!

Tuesday 25th August Rio de Janeiro

Our half day tour of Sugarloaf Mountain begins through downtown Rio, passing by the Sambodrome, the Metropolitan Cathedral, in pyramid form, with internal diameter of 96 meters and height of 80 meters. We visit the traditional Cinelândia Square with the historical buildings, the Municipal Theatre, the National Library and the National Museum of Fine Arts. We shall ascent by cable car to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain where we shall once again enjoy spectacular views of this amazing city. The tour will end in the down town area or the coach will transfer you back to the hotel.

Wednesday  26th August Rio de Janeiro

Today is a day of leisure. Just head to the beach, the shops or relax by the pool at the hotel.

OPTIONAL: Tropical Island tour.
After approximately a one-hour trip, the bus arrives in Itacuruçá where the schooner will depart for a full-day cruise around Rio's Tropical Islands. White sands, palms and clear water are just part of this paradise inviting you to relax and enjoy. This area is known for being one of the best places for diving and fishing in Brazil, and if you are lucky you may also see a few dolphins having fun on the waters. This optional tour includes lunch which will be on a private Island where you may also be able to spot interesting birds and animals. There are also many other activities and tours to enjoy while in Rio.

Thursday 27th August Rio de Janeiro - Lima

We farewell the beautiful city of Rio de Janeiro this morning and travel by air to Lima. Lima is situated in the coastal desert district between the Pacific Ocean and the western hills of the Andes mountains. Lima runs at a slower pace than many South American metropolises; its rhythm is more traditional and its people reflect a steadier, calmer constitution. Lima's physical atmosphere is slightly dreamlike, mostly because of the garua, a mist that settles over the city between May and October. Several museums display and preserve Peru's golden past, including most notably the internationally famed Museo Nacional de Antropologica y Arqueologica and the Museo de Oro, the stunning museum of Gold. Every part of Lima has its own unique atmosphere. Downtown Lima is crowded and busy, both modern and colonial at the same time. The Plaza Mayor is considered one of the most beautiful plazas in Latin America. The other heart of Lima is the uptown shopping and business area, Miraflores, where our hotel is located. Our next two nights will be spent at the Marriott Hotel, or similar, and we shall enjoy dinner at the hotel.

Friday 28th August

Lima

Our half day sightseeing tour of Lima and the Gold Museum offers the best of colonial and modern Lima. Observe Lima's most imposing colonial churches and mansions such as the Government Palace, the Plaza Mayor, the City Hall and the Cathedral, including 17th century San Francisco Monastery. The tour ends with a visit to the modern suburbs of San Isidro, and a visit to the pre-Inca pyramid of Huaca Huallamarca and on-site museum. Plus we shall explore one of the world's largest private gold collections at Lima's Gold Museum, displaying a dazzling array of pre-Columbian gold, silver and copper works of art. Created by Peru's innovative metal-smiths, the collection showcases works from the various civilizations that inhabited this country. The museum also features a collection of antique firearms from around the world.  The Rosa Náutica Restaurant, where we will stop for lunch, includes the most complete menu of Peruvian and International specialties, in a magical location. Afternoon and evening at leisure.

Saturday 29th August Lima - Paracas

This morning, we depart Lima and travel south along the Panamericana highway through an arid desert and lush coastal oasis. Some 250 km south of Lima lies Paracas, a windswept arid peninsula and site of one of Peru's most well known archaeological sites. The Paracas Reserve, Peru's largest coastal wildlife sanctuary, includes the Ballestas Islands. These islands are home to thousands of resident and migratory sea birds, many endemic to the Humboldt Current, including pelicans, boobies, cormorants, terns and gulls who share their habitat with herds of sea lions and fur seals.

OPTIONAL: From Paracas, an hour's drive south along the Panamericana highway will take us to Ica, a verdant oasis and home of Peru's famous pisco grape brandy  This is the site of the world famous ground markings preserved by Dr. Maria Reiche. Giant animal and geometric figures were etched on the desert sands by Nazca people some 1,500 years ago. These giant geoglyphs are best viewed from the air and flights over the markings can be arranged. Flight duration in a small aircraft is approx. 1 hour 20mins.

Tonight we stay at the beautiful Libertador Paracas and enjoy dinner in the restaurant at the hotel.

Sunday 30th August       Paracas - Ballestas Island - Nazca

After breakfast, we will head out for a boat trip to the Ballestas Islands. We shall see the famous candlestick design, a Nazca civilization figure etched on the desert face from the boat. These spectacular islands, eroded into many caves and arches, provide shelter for thousands of seabirds and hundreds of sea-lions. Although the islands fall just outside the Paracas National Reserve they are protected by separate legislation.  In the afternoon, we will have a relaxing drive to Nazca. Tonight we stay at the Casa Andina Nazca.

Monday 31st August Nazca - Arequipa

Today after breakfast we shall be driving from Nazca to Arequipa city. Arequipa, also called "the white city" lies in the south of Peru. At 2325 m above sea level, Arequipa is part of La Sierra. The city, in the middle of a fertile Andes valley, is surrounded by spectacular mountains. One of them is El Misti (5822m), with a perfect conical shape and a snow-capped summit. The city suffers from many earthquakes and was hit by a severe quake in June 2001 and for that reason the Arequipeños do not build high buildings. From an aesthetic point of view this is an advantage, because it gives the city a well-balanced structure. The low buildings combined with the white stone make Arequipa an extremely beautiful city. The city is one of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites. Arequipa, with 621,000 inhabitants, is a prosperous city. The atmosphere however is quiet and colonial. We shall be staying at the Libertador Arequipa Hotel for the next two nights.  Tonight we dine at the hotel’s restaurant.

Tuesday 1st September Arequipa

Our morning sightseeing tour of Arequipa includes the Main Square, one of the most beautiful squares in Peru, and the Cathedral which is a prime example of XIXth century Peruvian architecture, housing beautiful treasures in gold and silver. We also visit the La Compañia Church, an ancient Jesuit temple, maybe the most important one in Arequipa due to its history and tradition, with a beautiful façade with carved columns, laurel crowns, flowers, birds, etc. A more careful look at the façade, however, reveals the limits of European influence, as the angels have Indian faces; and indeed one face is even crowned with feathers. Then, we will visit the Santa Catalina Convent; a "small town" built in the XVIIth century and opened to the public in 1970, after 400 years as a Cloister. Perfectly preserved for four centuries, we go back in time as we enter the Cloister and see numerous, spacious patios and gardens, the kitchen and slave quarters and stone washtubs of this Convent. About 20 nuns, of what were once 500, still live in a section of the Convent.  The rest of the day is free to enjoy this quaint town and start to adjust to the altitude.

Wednesday 2nd September

Arequipa - Cuzco - Sacred Valley

This morning we have a very early transfer to the airport for our flight to Cuzco.   On arrival at Cuzco airport we shall be met and transferred to our hotel in the Sacred Valley.  After checking in, we head out for a half day tour to see the Seminario Tejidos Chincheros famous for their fine alpaca weavings, and enjoy a lunch at Hacienda Huallocari, The Sacred Valley of the Incas was undoubtedly a key area of settlement to the Incas. The agreeable climate and fertile plains make a rare and fruitful combination for the high Andes. This was also the route to the jungle and therefore an area with access to the fruits and plants of the tropical lowlands. The Sacred Valley served as a buffer zone, protecting Cusco from incursions of the Antis, the fierce jungle tribes who from time to time raided the highlands. Today, the Sacred Valley remains a lush agricultural region supplying the city of Cusco with much of its produce such as maize, fruit and vegetables.  Our hotel for the next two nights will be the Casa Andina Private Collection, Sacred Valley, or similar.

Thursday 3rd September

Pisac Market & Ruins - Ollantaytambo and Misminay

Another fascinating day with a full day tour of Sacred Valley. During this tour we will have the chance to visit ruins such as Pisac and Ollantaytambo, along with a visit to the colourful Andean market of Pisac, We shall also visit Misminay community to see and learn the way of life of the Misminay people. During the tour we shall have a picnic lunch at the Sacred Valley.  Dinner tonight is at the hotel.

Friday 4th September

Urubamba (Sacred Valley) - Ollantaytmabo - Machu Picchu

An early start today for our transfer to Ollantaytambo railway station.  Once we arrive at Ollantaytambo railway station, we shall board the Vistadome train to the Aguas Calientes station and then a bus to Machu Picchu, the fabled city of the Incas. The joy of visiting Machu Picchu is not limited to the ruins themselves. After leaving Ollantaytambo, the railway enters the beginnings of a gorge, which grows narrower and deeper. The vegetation grows more prolific as we are entering the “eyebrow of the jungle”! And finally Aguas Calientes station, 1-½ kilometres below Machu Picchu. When Hiram Bingham rediscovered Machu Picchu in 1911, he mistakenly thought he had found the location of Vilcabamba, the lost city of the Incas. The true site of Vilcabamba was actually discovered by Gene Savoy in 1964. So, what was Machu Picchu? Many people say that it was some secret refuge. The Incas actually had no written language but they did have oral history recorders, however, the existence of Machu Picchu and the region seems to be entirely erased from official memory. Royal residence? A site of spiritual and ceremonial significance? Was it used for strategic reasons for defence from the fierce jungle tribes? “.....And Garcia de Loyola mentioned an Inca fortress that was 'on a high eminence surrounded by rugged crags and jungles, very dangerous to ascend and almost impregnable'. The granite sugarloaf of Huayna Picchu towers above the ruin, and shrouds of low clammy cloud often grip the surrounding forested hillsides. Such scenery makes Machu Picchu one of the world's most eerily beautiful ruins. Our local guide will guide us through the ruins and then we are free to wander. Our dinner and overnight accommodation is at Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel.

Saturday 5th September

Machu Picchu - Cuzco

We can visit Machu Picchu once again, enjoying another aspect of Machu Picchu in the early morning tranquility. (Please note that the entrance fee to the park is not included for this second day.) In the afternoon we shall take the train and then coach to Cuzco. Our hotel in Cuzco for the next two nights will be the Casa Andina Private Collection, or similar.

Sunday 6th September

Cuzco

Cuzco is one of the most famous cities in South America, as it is the oldest continuously inhabited metropolis on this continent. The city itself was probably founded in 1000 BC, but in 1534 the Spanish Conquerors re-founded it according to the European way. Wherever you stop in Cuzco you will find remains of ancient civilizations as this was the capital of the Incas, and the place where most of their superb works were done. This city is considered the archaeological capital of South America and was declared by UNESCO as a Cultural Heritage of Mankind site. Today’s half day tour includes the Qoricancha (temple of the sun) and the Cathedral and up to the famous fortress of Sacsahuaman. We then head back to our hotel for a free afternoon and evening. There are plenty of shopping opportunities or just wander along the narrow streets and soak up the atmosphere. There are several lovely restaurants close to our hotel.

Monday  7th September Cuzco - Puno

We travel today on the “Andean Explorer" a First Class Train journey between Cuzco and Lake Titicaca.  The Andean Explorer is exquisitely decorated in the fine manner of the great Pullman trains of the 1920’s and boasts a full fleet of refurbished coaches including dining cars and an open-air observation bar car, which is unique in South America. This spectacular rail journey travels south from Cuzco, gently climbing to higher and cooler altitudes. The first half of the journey is dominated by the magnificent Andean mountains which tower over the deep valleys of the meandering Huatanay River. It then reaches the gentler, rolling Andean Plains, where vicuñas and alpacas can be seen. When travelling aboard the Andean Explorer, the glass-walled observation car provides the perfect opportunity to view the beautiful scenery. We are treated to excellent dining which includes a three-course lunch, followed by coffee served in the observation car.  From Cuzco the train heads south-east, past Oropesa, Lake Muina, the Vilcanota River at Huambutio which plunges sharply into its gorge before widening into the great Urubamba canyon. We travel past villages which are home to pre-Columbian and colonial treasures, and see the great temple of Viracocha at Raqchi, a homage to the creator God and probably the largest roofed building ever built by the Incas. The journey is broken by a scenic stop at La Raya, at 4321 metres above sea level, this is the highest point on the journey, a cold, remote place whose surrounding snow-draped peaks shrouded by mist or fine rain are visible. We continue southward until arriving at Puno. Upon arrival at Puno train station we shall be met and transferred to our hotel for the next two nights, the Casa Andina Private Collection Puno, or similar, and dinner is included at the hotel.

Tuesday 8th September Taquille & Uros Island

On our full day tour to the Taquile & Uros Islands we will experience the Andean culture. Their boats, their houses and their islands are made from the reeds. The Uros on the islands have intermarried with the Aymara and no pure Uros exist. The present Puno Bay people still practice some Uros traditions, but Aymara influence predominates. Tonight we can relax with dinner at the hotel.

Wednesday 9th September Puno - Sun Island - La Paz

Today we cross from Peru into Bolivia, via the lovely lakeside village of Copacabana with its remarkable church and views of Lake Titicaca. During the journey it may be possible to view the snowcapped mountains of the Cordillera Real. Our guide is also a naturalist who has a keen interest in “life” (flora and fauna) on the lake and he will be happy to share his knowledge and answer our questions. We transfer to Copacabana Sanctuary and board the catamaran where we will enjoy lunch while sailing to Sun Island, the legendary birth place of the Inca Empire. We visit the Inca Garden, steps and fountain, then the Inti Wata Cultural Complex including the Ekako Underground Museum, the traditional medicine and the Titikaka Reed Shipbuilders display centres, the Pachamama agricultural Inca terraces, a handicraft centre, the Intica lounge and at the Manco Kapac look out and the largest variety of Andean cameloids.  Our catamaran heads to Chua harbor and then a coach transfer to La Paz city. The nest two nights will be at Hotel Europa, or similar, Dinner tonight is at the hotel’s restaurant.

Thursday 10th September La Paz

The “City of Contrast”, La Paz is a blend of many civilisations. Today we shall visit a typical Indian market, the famous Witch Doctor's Market and the San Francisco Colonial Church. Our tour continues to the Plaza Murillo where the Cathedral, the Government Palace and the National Congress buildings are located. We shall also visit the famous colonial street Calle Jaen, where interesting museums are clustered together, followed by a visit to the replica of the semi subterranean temple of the Tiwanaku Culture. For a change of scenery, the tour continues to residential areas of Obrajes, Calacoto and La Florida. The tour ends with a visit to the unique Moon Valley to view the rose coloured volcanic rock formations. The afternoon is free for the last minute shopping or repack the suitcase! Our dinner this evening we be our last chance to enjoy some local dishes as well as a great Folkloric Show to farewell the Andean region.

Friday 11th September La Paz - Santiago

We depart La Paz this morning by air arriving in Santiago de Chile in the late afternoon.  After being transferred to our hotel, the Plaza El Bosque - Park & Suites, or similar, we can enjoy dinner in the hotel’s restaurant.

Saturday 12th September Santiago de Chile – Auckland - Melboune

This morning we will be picked up from our hotel for a sightseeing tour of the city of Santiago and see the Civic Centre, La Moneda Presidential Palace, the house of government that was originally built to coin money. In 1846 and until 1958, President Manuel Bulnes had La Moneda fitted out as the private residence of Chile's presidents. Now the building has been renovated as Government Palace, seat of the Presidency of the Republic. The Plaza de Armas, originally, and following Spanish customs, is an open space where open air markets could be held and it wasn't until 1860 that the first flower gardens were planted together with trees that are still there to this day. The Cathedral has three previous versions erected on the same site, that have all fallen prey to fires or earthquakes. The fourth and present building was completed in 1775. We will pass the main post office, erected in 1882 using some of the walls from the former Governor's Palace in colonial times, the pedestrian streets of Huerfanos and Ahumada, indisputably the social, commercial and functional axis of Santiago, the prestigious social Union Club, the National Library, Santa Lucia hill, the site of the foundation of Santiago on February 12, 1541 before heading towards the Bellavista district. This area is the home of much of Santiago's artisans, and is lined with galleries, as well as open-air cafes and restaurants, and nightlife. We will go to a lookout on San Cristobal Hill, its tallest peaks rising 880 m above sea level for a panoramic view of the city. Continue towards the residential districts of Vitacura, Las Condes and Providencia, boasting modern high rise buildings and exclusive shopping malls.  On completion of the tour, we shall have the choice of staying at exclusive Parque Arauco shopping centre for those last minute souvenirs before heading back to the hotel. We have use of our rooms until 6.00pm before a late evening transfer to the airport.

Sunday 1st November: Cappadocia

After an early breakfast, we head out to see more of Cappadocia. Kaymakli Underground City was carved out underneath a rock hill (Kaymakli Castle). The first three floors were probably carved out by Hittites about 2000BC. By the 4 th -century BC, Alexander the Great occupied the region and became dominant. The Underground cities were enlarged to around eight floors for Christian refuge around 376AD. In the underground city there are some main galleries and inside them are sub divisions that are carved out to make the city very complicated to confuse the enemies. Next we visit Avanos town to see a carpet weaving atelier and we also have an opportunity for a “hand-on” experience for pottery making. After lunch we head to the Guvercinlik Valley, known as Pigeon Valley then onto Uchisar, a gigantic rock, carved out by the Christians. It dominates the Cappadocia region and offers a magnificent view for those who climb on top of the rock. We arrive back at the hotel mid afternoon to enjoy some free time before dinner at the hotel. After dinner there is a special Whirling Devrishes Performance at Sarihan.

Rumi's influence on Turkish cultural life was highly significant. The mausoleum room is highly ornamented with Islamic script and contains tombs of several important figures of the dervish order. The main tomb enclosed behind a silver gate crafted in 1597 is that of Mevlana. By late afternoon we arrive at the Dederman Hotel in Konya for one night's stay and dinner.

We arrive back at the hotel early so the afternoon is at leisure. Dinner tonight is at our hotel, the Dogan Hotel.

Wednesday 4 th November:

Antalya

Our tour today includes a visit to Perge, Aspendos and the Archeological Museum. Perge, settled by the Hittities around 1500BC, was an important trade route and also famous by the fact that when St Paul started his journeys, he visited Perge in 46AD and preached his first sermon here. We will see the ruins of the antique theatre (cap 12000 people), its stage has reliefs depicting the life of Dionysos. Our next stop is Aspendos, famous for its best-preserved theatre of antiquity built in the 2 nd c AD and is still used today for performances and festivals. We visit the acropolis of the city with a great view of the river. The Museum of Archology offers an excellent display of the great periods in Pamphylia's history, through Neolithic, the Bronze Age, Hellenistic and Roman times. The rich ethnographic section of the museum displays a great variety of material of the Turkish period – weapons, clothing, jewellery, books, tiles, glass, porcelain, musical instruments and carpets, together with a loom. We return to our hotel in the mid afternoon for a little relaxation before dinner tonight at the hotel.

Thursday, 5th November:

Antalya – Pamukkale

We leave Antalya this morning and drive towards Pamukkale with a visit to Hierapolis, which was founded in 190BC by Eumenes II king of Pergamon. Today the city has extensive ruins; the city walls, the octagonal Martyrium of St Philip, the 2 nd centre theatre, Temple of Apollo, basilica then the necropolis which covers 2km and contains some of the best examples of tomb styles. Our tour continues on to Pamukkale, meaning “cotton castle” in Turkish. It is a natural site and UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site. The water (35c) which is flowing down the cliff of Pamukkale has turned the area into as white as cotton color, and carved this fantastic formation of stalactites and basins. We reach our hotel, Lycus Hotel in the late afternoon for one night's stay and dinner.

Our hotel, the Kalehan Hotel, is situated in the centre of Selcuk just below the sixth century castle and only 3km from the world famous archeological site of Ephesus. We will have a free afternoon to relax by the pool or to revisit the town of Ephesus.

Saturday 7th November:

Selcuk – Canakkale

This morning after breakfast we take a tour to the Greek City Pergamum. Here we will visit the theatre, unusual for its steep slope and position, the library where parchment was first widely used, and the Asclepion, one of the most famous therapeutic centres in the ancient world. After a break for lunch we continue travelling to Canakkale, and will reach the hotel in the late afternoon. Canakkale is a town and seaport on the southern coast of the Dardanelles at their narrowest point. Dinner tonight is at our hotel, the Kolin Hotel, where we are staying for 2 nights.

Sunday 8th November: Canakkale

An early start for our tour to Troy and Gallipoli. Troy is a legendary city and centre of the Trojan War, as described in the Epic Cycle, and especially in the Iliad, one of the two epic poems attributed to Homer. Trojan refers to the inhabitants and culture of Troy. Today it is the name of an archaeological site, excavated in the 1870s by German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann. Later excavations revealed several cities built in succession to each other. The archaeological site of Troy was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1998. We will visit this complex site which now reveals nine different periods from 3000BC to 400AD. We continue on our tour and cross to the other side of Dardanelles by ferry. We enjoy a lunch at the Mydos Restaurtant before heading onto Gallipoli. The Gallipoli campaign took place between April and December 1915 in an effort to take the Dardanelles from the Turkish Ottoman Empire and force it out of the war. Some 60,000 Australians and 18,000 New Zealanders were part of a larger British force. Many Australians and New Zealanders fought on the Peninsula from the day of the landings (April 25, 1915) until the excavation of December 20, 1915. On our visit to Gallipoli we will visit Anzac Cove, Lone Pine Cemetery, Johnston's Jolly, The Nek, Chunuk Bair NZ memorial. Our tour ends when we arrive at back at our hotel in time for some rest before dinner at the hotel.
